Townhall (the ancient old Convent of Saint Peter of Alcántara) |
The building which is now used as the townhall, once belonged to the ancient church of the convent of the order of Saint Peter of Alcantara. The cost of building was met by contributions of the towns inhabitants. The building work began in 1669 and completed in 1688.
The convent had a clear social function in that it was used as a hospital and an accomodation for the needy. The nuns vacated in 1835 and the convent was auctioned in the same year. However the church was still used. The architectual style is austere, and it corresponds well to its original function. |
